The Central Cluster encompasses the Blacktown and Hawkesbury LGAs; a geographic area of about 3,047 sq kms. A population of 317,437 reside within the boundaries of the Blacktown (256,364) and Hawkesbury (61,073) LGA. In some parts of the Blacktown LGA the Aboriginal population is higher than the state average, there are pockets of low socio-economic disadvantage and there are more children 0-4 than in other LGAs in the SWAHS. A similar picture is apparent in the Hawkesbury LGA however in general this LGA has a more affluent resident population than in the Blacktown LGA.

In relation to the burden of disease, in the Central Cluster the level of cardiovascular disease (stroke), motor vehicle injury, lung cancer, diabetes and obesity is higher than the state average.

The Central Cluster comprises three hospital facilities, Blacktown / Mt Druitt and Hawkesbury Hospital , with a total combined bed base of 661 ; and four Clinical Networks, Aged Care and Chronic and Complex Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Pharmacy and Allied Health, Acute Interventional Medicine and Teaching and Research. A summary of the services that make up each Network is provided below.

In 2004/05 there were a total of 2,421FTE staff, excluding Hawkesbury Hospital staff, employed to work in the Central Cluster.
