Frequently asked questions about THiNK TWiCE from Schools and the Answers!

What does the THiNK TWiCE team talk to the students about?
A professional from the Brain Injury Unit gives a general introduction as to what a brain injury is, how it happens, how it is treated and what the long term effects can be. There is some audience participation with opportunities for students to experience simulated disabilities.

Three or four individuals who have had a brain injury talk about their accident and how their injury has effected their lifestyle. Sometimes a family member talks about what the injury has meant in their lives.

How long does it take?
It takes about 1 hour for the presentation - any less time means that less speakers are involved & the students miss out on the opportunity to meet & hear from a range of people.

What are the speakers like?
Some of our speakers are in wheelchairs or have some difficulty walking and will require disabled access. All of our speakers have experience in talking before a group & a variety of age groups.

Does the school have to do anything at the presentation?
A teacher must be in attendance during the presentation. Students need to have a pen in order to complete our evaluation forms.

There needs to be enough room for the students to sit comfortably, with an overhead projector and screen and a small table to place notes on. If a lectern is available it is helpful for some of our speakers. Some of our presenters have video footage to show the students but if a television and VCR is unavailable or will be too small for the group they will use overheads instead.

We need about 30 mins to set up the room before the presentation is due to start.

If you are able to provide details of the room layout & the position of power points, wheel chair access & best place to park/unload prior to the presentation date this is also helpful.

Does it cost anything?
No it is free, but we do accept donations. Cheques should be made payable to the Westmead Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service.
