Philosophy

The Education Department is an integral part of the Hospital and embraces the philosophy of all departments.

The Education Department serves to develop employees and subsequently enhance the care provided to our residents. Education activities are designed and implemented to promote a high standard of safe, effective practice and to increase job enrichment through life long learning. Emphasis is placed on the application of knowledge to the actual work environment. The impact of programs is directed to the learner, the environment, the resident and family.

We endeavour to ensure that the education environment is non-threatening and acknowledge the individuality of our learners. We encourage the application of learning, free exchange of ideas and creativity.

Teaching and learning is a dynamic, collaborative process between teacher and learner. We endeavour to establish a relationship characterised by mutual trust and acceptance with varying degrees of independence, dependence and interdependence with our learners. This process should result in a change in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective behaviour of the individual.

Mastery learning assists learners in achieving an acceptable level of performance and is utilised to provide a basis for accountability to the resident and the hospital.

Conceptual Framework

In order to provide quality care for our residents, their carers and families, education must be provided to meet the initial and continuing needs of all staff.

The components of the Education Program include Orientation, Mandatory Education, and Continuing Inservice Education. These address developing needs necessary for employees to function at a safe level with all residents. Continuing Education prepares staff to provide comprehensive Care and Services.

Competency Based Training

In order to identify what an individual can do as a result of training, Lottie Stewart Hospital Education endeavours to base education and training on competencies.

It is considered that a competency based approach to training will provide delivery, assessment and certification of training which would relate to the demonstration of skills, knowledge and attitudes and their application required for effective performance in the workplace. Competency focuses on what the employee is expected to do in the workplace.
