History

The Portland District Hospital was originally founded and built out of the generosity of the community back in 1911. Then local businessmen Walter Tweedie and Cement Works manager John Saville built the hospital as they needed to care for workers injured in accidents that occurred at the local mines and cement works. There was also a need for a hospital due to a typhoid outbreak.

It was originally built at 20 Kiln Street, opening in 1913 and was later renovated in the 1960s.

More recently, the Portland Tabulam Cottages aged care facility in Green Street was built from the fundraising efforts of the community.

A new multipurpose like facility opened in December 2006 at the Green Street site that combined the hospital and the aged care services into a new multipurpose like health centre for Portland
