Adolescent Medicine
Services Provided
Adolescent Team clinical interventions are primarily focussed on patients admitted to the Adolescent Ward, the Adolescent Ambulatory Care (Outpatient) Center and the Adolescent Eating Disorders Day Program. Outreach services are also provided, on referral, to complex adolescent patients in outlying wards at Westmead Hospital, who are unable to be accommodated in the Adolescent Ward during their admission.
The Adolescent Team has specialist experience in managing anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders, as well as chronic fatigue syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and complex psychosomatic illnesses requiring a multidisciplinary approach to care.
Comprehensive care is achieved through a multidisciplinary team approach to medical management and individual and family assessments and therapy. This multidisciplinary approach includes:
- adolescent and family assessments, counseling and therapy
- advocacy for young people
- education for young people, parents and staff
- transitional care planning and management
- discharge planning and networking with other community services.
- Teleconferencing support is also offered to regional and rural areas of New South Wales to assist local staff in managing complex adolescent patients in their own area health services when ever possible.
