Intensive Care Senior Registrars, Westmead

The Westmead Intensive Care Unit has a total of 5 Senior Registrar positions.

Applications are invited for the above posts (approved for 24 months core training) from advanced trainees in Intensive Care. Posts are available for twelve months with the possibility of extension for a further twelve months, or a six-month Medicine or Paediatric Intensive Care rotation if required. Preference will be given to candidates who hold (or are in the process of obtaining) FJFICM, FANZCA, FRACP, FRCA, FFARCSI or equivalent qualification. The successful applicants will have demonstrated a commitment to a career in Critical Care Medicine and a strong interest in research and teaching.

Remuneration is at Senior Registrar level with overtime payment. Duties rotate between General ICU, consults, and non-clinical responsibilities. On-call roster is 1-in-3.

The Intensive Care Unit at Westmead Hospital is in the process of expanding from 16 to 20 beds in a Level 3 General Intensive Care Unit in a 736-bed tertiary referral and trauma centre, a major teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sydney. The Unit currently treats approximately 800 ventilated patients per year (average APACHE II score 19, intubation rate > 99%), while the adjacent Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit manages approximately 700 patients per year.

Westmead Hospital is set in the western suburbs of Sydney, with easy access to the City and its surroundings. Hospital accommodation is available.

The medical staff complement will consist of 6.2 Staff Specialists, 5 Senior Registrars, 13 Registrars and 2 Residents. Day shift staffing will comprise 2 Specialists, 2 Senior Registrars, 3 Registrars and a Resident. Night shift staffing will comprise 3 Registrars with Specialist and Senior Registrar on call.

Westmead Intensive Care has a well-organised teaching program, consisting of a weekly rotation of lectures, tutorials and journal clubs. Exam-oriented training is available for FANZCA and FJFICM candidates. Attendance at appropriate Intensive Care training courses and conferences is encouraged.
