Professor Lyn Gilbert (Director)

MBBS (Melbourne), MD (Melbourne), FRACP, FRCPA, M.Bioethics (Monash)

Lyn Gilbert is Director of CIDMLS and CIDMPH. After training in clinical infectious diseases and microbiology in Melbourne and in the UK she was appointed Senior lecturer in Microbiology, University of Melbourne in 1977 Director of Microbiology, Royal Women's Hospital  Melbourne in 1979 and Director of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Royal Children's Hospital in 1984. Lyn was appointed to the position of Director CIDMLS in 1991.

 

Dr Dominic Dwyer

MBBS (UNSW), MD (UNSW), FRACP, FRPCA

Dominic Dwyer is the Medical Virologist and an infectious diseases physician at Westmead Hospital in Sydney. He is a graduate of the University of New South Wales, with a MD in Virology. He trained at St Vincent's and Westmead Hospitals in Sydney, and undertook postgraduate research at the Institute Pasteur in Paris, France. He is a member of various Commonwealth, NHMRC and State committees, including the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia, the Public Health Laboratory Network and the NSW Infectious Diseases Emergency Advisory Committee.

 

Assoc. Professor Jon Iredell

MBBS (Qld), PhD(Adelaide), FRACP, FRCPA

Jon Iredell (MBBS PhD FRACP FRCPA) trained clinically in Brisbane (Intensive Care, Infectious Diseases, and Microbiology) and Adelaide (Infectious Diseases and Microbiology), and in science at the University of Adelaide (1992-6) and, briefly, the Max Planck Instutute for Microbiology (Tuebingen, 1995). Director of Internal Medicine and Intensive Care QE2 Hospital, Brisbane 1996-7, then moved to Westmead: fractional appointment as staff specialist in general Intensive Care/ staff specialist Infectious Diseases and Microbiology (CIDM). Inaugural Chair Division One Australian Society Microbiology (2002-4). Conjoint academic appointment University of Sydney. Deputy Postgraduate Co-ordinator for Western Clinical School and Westmead Millennium Institute.

 

Assoc. Professor Wieland Meyer

PhD (University of Berlin)

Wieland Meyer is head of the Molecular Mycology Laboratory at the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, with a conjoint appointment as Senior Research Fellow at the Faculty of Medicine, Western Clinical School, of the University of Sydney and the Westmead Millennium Institute, Westmead, NSW. He graduated in Genetics with a Diploma in Biology (=MSc, suma cum laude), from the Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany in 1986 and went on to complete his PhD (suma cum laude), at the same University in 1992. He undertook his postdoctorial studies at the Department of Microbiology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, USA (1992-1995), before he established the Molecular Mycology Laboratory at Westmead Hospital in 1995 and the Australian National Molecular Mycology Reference Laboratory.

 

Professor Adrian Mindel

MD (London)

Adrian Mindel is the Professor Sexual Health Medicine, University of Sydney and Director of the Sexually Transmitted Infections Research Centre (STIRC) based at Westmead Hospital. He is a graduate of the University of Witwatersrand with an MD from the University of London. Adrian was appointed as Professor of Sexual Health Medicine in 1992.

 

Assoc. Professor Richard Russell

BSc MSc PhD (Syd) FACTM

Richard Russell is Director of the Department of Medical Entomology, CIDM and

Associate Professor, Department of Medicine and School of Public Health, University of Sydney. Richard was with the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from 1970 until its closure in 1987, whence he moved to the Department of Medicine and became the Founding Director of the Dept of Medical Entomology at ICPMR, Westmead Hospital. He has experience with all aspects of medical entomology but most of his work has been concentrated on mosquitoes, their biology and ecology, and role as pests and vectors of human pathogens.

 

Professor Tania Sorrell

MBBS (Adelaide), MD (Adelaide), FRACP

Tania Sorrell is Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases and Director of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, Director of CIDM Biomed, and a member of the executive of CIDM Public Health. She is a graduate of the University of Adelaide, with an MD in Clinical Immunology. She was appointed Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases at the University of Sydney in 1988.
