Centre for Population Health - Projects

Aboriginal safety promotion program

Rationale:

  • NSW Health has identified Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) population as a priority population.
  • SWAHS has the highest concentration of ATSI population in Blacktown compared to any other State LGA.
  • Aboriginal injury rates in NSW (deaths, hospitalisation and emergency treatment) are at least three times and possibly six times those of non-Aboriginal people.
  • Blacktown Aboriginal Injury Surveillance and Prevention Project report provides strong community evidence for support for addressing safety issues in the Blacktown Aboriginal community.
  • Sydney West Aboriginal Safety Promotion Program supports the National and State Aboriginal Safety Promotion Strategy.
  • An opportunity to build the capacity of both indigenous and non-indigenous workers from various Government and non-Government organisations to work collaboratively to address the safety issues of the Aboriginal communities.
