Population Health and Strategic Direction

Centre for Population Health

The Centre is a new entity formed by the merger of the Centre for Public Health in the former Western Sydney Area Health Service and the Health Protection and Health Promotion Units from the former Wentworth Area Health Service.

The Centre for Population Health is responsible for a range of health promotion and health protection programs that include multi-disciplinary partnerships aimed at building individual, community and organisational capacity to improve and sustain health. These include:

The Centre also takes the lead role in maintaining some key health partnerships such as Local Government and Schools.

Health Protection

Health Protection refers to those activities which are primarily concerned with the exercise of legislation designed to “protect” the health of the public. The principal legislative instruments in NSW are the Public Health Act 1991 and various Regulations covering areas such as infectious diseases, drinking water, microbial control, swimming pools, disposal of bodies and tobacco control. Other important legislation includes the SmokeFree Environment Act 2000 and its amendments.

There are three key areas of work within Health Protection –

Program staff operate from offices in the Parramatta (Cumberland Hospital) and Penrith (Nepean Hospital) areas.
