In 1996, the former Western Sydney Area Health Service (WSAHS) had 2,117 new cancers. The four most common sites were prostate, lung, colo-rectal, and melanoma for males and breast, colo-rectal, melanoma and uterus/ovary for females.
Nine hundred and twenty-six residents died from cancer in 1998 (519 males, 407 females) and 28,260 residents (118 males per 100 females) hospitalised due to cancer between 1993/94 to 1997/98.
