Diabetes and Endocrinology
Clinical Trials Units
The Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinical Trials Unit co-ordinates studies into the use of new treatments for Diabetes and other hormonal conditions. Some of these trials are initiated by Westmead clinicians, some by multi-centre or international study teams, and some by pharmaceutical companies. These studies enable us to evaluate state-of-the-art treatment methods. All research at Westmead Hospital is scrutinised by the Research Ethics and Safety Committee.
CURRENT TRIALS
(1) HI-5 Study
(Hyperglycaemia, intensive insulin infusion in infarction)
A 3 year NHMRC funded clinical trial of the effect of insulin infusion in patients suffering an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
(2) FIELD (Fenofibrate)
Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes) study.
A 5 year multi-centre, international study for people with Type 2 (non-insulin dependant) Diabetes. This study aims to determine if cholesterol-lowering treatment will reduce the rate of heart attack and stroke in diabetic patients who currently have fairly normal cholesterol levels. Participants are people who have Type 2 Diabetes, aged 50-75 years, and not already being treated with drugs for high cholesterol. The FIELD study is sponsored by the NH&MRC.
(3) SCOUT (SIBUTRAMINE IN CARDIOVASCULAR OUTCOMES)
A 3-year multicentre, international study to examine the longterm safety and effectiveness of Sibutramine in overweight or obese people with known cardiovascular disease.
Participants are over 55 y.o who have either had Coronary Artery Disease, a stroke, Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease or Type II Diabetes and who's Body Mass Index is >27 and less than 45.
The SCOUT study is sponsored by Abbott laboratories.
(4)IPSEN ACROMEGALY STUDY
Acromegaly is a disorder caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) usually associated with a growth hormone secreting pituitary adenoma.
The primary study objective is to assess the ability of patients or their partners to perform unsupervised injections of lanreotide autogel. What is also important is the acceptability of lanreotide Autogel injections to healthcare professionals whilst asessing the acceptability of lanreotide Autogel injections to the patient.
