Diabetes and Endocrinology
Endocrinology Laboratory
The Endocrinology Laboratory provides an integrated endocrinology service to the hospitals of the Sydney West Area Health Service including some rural areas in the Far West of New South Wales. We receive referral specimens from other sources such as private pathology laboratories, and public and private hospitals throughout the state. A wide range of hormone assays, dynamic endocrine tests and other diagnostic services are offered.
All diagnostic testing procedures have been streamlined by the application of methods using 'state-of-the-art' technology to deliver timely results. A comprehensive endocrine testing menu is available for endocrine and metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, pituitary dysfunction, bone and calcium disorders, adrenal dysfunction, infertility and thyroid diseases.
The department has a strong and special interest in thyroid physiology and thyroid disorders, and houses the Australian Centre for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders(ACCIDD) which provides assistance to developing countries in the Asia Pacific region, in the fight against iodine disorders (IDD). Training skills in laboratory Management and Poject Management are part of the ACCIDD function.
Details of ACCIDD can be found at: www.icpm.gov.au/accidd
Dynamic endocrine testing is performed in the Clinical Endocrinology and Diabetes Education Centre (CEDEC) at Westmead Hospital. Departmental laboratory staff work with clinical endocrinologists in the provision of results interpretation and consultative clinical advice.
The department maintains a strong collaborative research relationship with CEDEC and maintains an active involvement in the laboratory training of clinical Endocrinology registrars.
