Diabetes and Endocrinology
Endocrine Disorders in Pregnancy Service
Pregnancy creates major changes in many hormonal systems. The normal values for the levels of many hormones are significantly different in pregnancy, thereby creating difficulties in interpretation and diagnosis. Several endocrine disorders may occur specifically in the context of pregnancy. The management of endocrine disorders in pregnancy requires specific expertise in order to ensure optimal conditions for foetal growth. This is a special area of interest of a number of the endocrinologists at Westmead.
The Endocrine Disorders in Pregnancy Service provides expertise in the management of:
- Endocrine disorders complicated by pregnancy (eg diabetes mellitus, thyroid, pituitary and adrenal disease)
- Endocrine disorders induced by pregnancy (eg gestational diabetes, gestational hyperthyroidism, diabetes insipidus of pregnancy, autoimmune hypophysitis)
