The Collection
Books
Books in the library are organised on the shelves according to the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) Classification Scheme.
All books on the same subject have the same shelf number. To find a book by subject you can: consult the guides at the end of the shelves; use the computer catalogue; or ask a library staff member for assistance.
Specific authors/titles can be searched using the computer catalogue. It shows holdings for the following hospital libraries: Blacktown, Mt Druitt, Auburn, Westmead, the Mental Health Library (Cumberland) and Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Books are available for borrowing by registered borrowers. A maximum of 10 items (includes books, videos, audiocassettes etc) at any time may be borrowed. The loan period for our books, videos and audiovisuals is three weeks and renewals are permitted if no other borrower is waiting on the item.
Journals
All the journals held at Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals can be found by looking on the catalogue. The catalogue will tell you whether specific issues have arrived from 2003 onwards, for earlier issue(s) just call either library and they will be able to help.
When in the libraries, the most recent issue(s) of a journal are located on the new issues stand. Older issues and bound volumes are kept on the shelves in alphabetical order by journal title. If you cannot find certain issues please ask a library staff member for assistance.
There is a list of departmental journals available from library staff. Journals, which are housed in departments, are available for use by BMDH staff according to conditions set down by the department(s) in question. Journals are not available for loan.
Reference Collection
The reference collection contains dictionaries, directories, encyclopaedias, pharmacopoeias and some standard texts. These items are NOT for loan and must be used in the Library.
