Services

The Eating Disorders Day Treatment Program is one of three specialised and co-ordinated treatment services for adults (18+ years old) with an eating disorder residing in the area serviced by Sydney West Area Health Service, the others being the Eating Disorders Outpatient Clinic (Department of Medical Psychology, Westmead Hospital) and the Eating Disorders Inpatient Service (Departments of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology, Westmead Hospital). A Day Treatment Program is a type of treatment that is more intensive than that provided by outpatient treatment and a less intensive treatment option than inpatient treatment. It has the advantage of allowing clients to remain in the community and receive treatment rather than being admitted to hospital.

A multidisciplinary team consisting of a Clinical Psychologist, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Psychiatric Registrar, Dietitian, Social Worker and Administrative Officer run the program.

Clients attend treatment for four full days each week. Treatment for the most part is in small groups and is aimed at promoting weight restoration or maintenance, normalisation of eating behaviour and attitudes, cessation of compensatory behaviours, and normalisation of psychosocial functioning. The level of treatment received is tailored to the needs of each client. A person’s suitability for the program will be determined through as assessment by the team. Persons attending the program are required to have regular contact with their general practitioner.

To make a referral the program, please contact the intake officer on: (02) 9630 9423.
