About Sydney West Area Mental Health
Sydney West Area Mental Health Service employs medical staff at all levels, from RMO1 to staff specialist psychiatrist. We have a much sought-after registrar training scheme with placements in acute general, rehabilitation, consultation-liaison, forensic, child/family/adolescent, and aged care psychiatry. Medical staff work in Westmead, Cumberland, and Blacktown Hospitals and associated community mental health services, as well as the St John of God private hospitals at Burwood and Richmond. Registrars also routinely do secondments at Nepean and New Children's Hospitals as well as the inpatient unit at Long Bay.
Sydney West Area Mental Health is renowned for its psychotherapy program and the development of the conversational model of psychotherapy under the leadership of Professor Russell Meares. The University of Sydney conducts its Master of Medicine (Psychotherapy) course on site at Cumberland and this is available to medical staff working in Western Sydney. There is an active research program including ground-breaking work in integrative neurosciences, with opportunities to participate in this from clinical areas. The NSW Institute of Psychiatry is also on-site at Cumberland.
Westmead is one of Australia's premier teaching hospitals, a centre of excellence in a range of medical and surgical specialties, as well as incorporating the Millenium Research Institute. The cluster of Westmead, Cumberland and Children's Hospital Westmead, all within short walking distance of each other, is perhaps the greatest concentration of clinical resources in the country.
Psychiatry in Western Sydney is broad-based and exciting. Our constituency of 700,000 population includes diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic groups, in settings varying from medium density urban to semi-rural. Our staff are exceptional in their motivation and talent.
