Basic Physician Trainee

Westmed Network

(Westmead, Blacktown, Hornsby and Orange Hospitals)

The Westmed Network offers a well-established basic physician training program with positions in Westmead, Blacktown, Hornsby and Orange Hospitals.  Our Hospitals offer terms in all sub-specialities of internal medicine. All terms are accredited for basic physician training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Successful applicants are typically able to spend 50% of their basic training at Westmead Hospital, where they will receive cutting-edge experience working with academic tertiary referral units (such as cardiology; gastroenterology, haematology and infectious diseases).  Blacktown Hospital is now also a teaching hospital of the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney, with twelve subspecialty medical teams: most offering Staff Specialist and Advanced Trainee in-house supervision of basic training terms. Apart from the obvious attractions of access and lifestyle, Orange and Hornsby Hospitals are distinguished by the quality and dedication to teaching of their general physicians.

The Westmed Network offers a comprehensive and active basic physician training program to facilitate the successful completion of the FRACP examination.  Like many other Networks, Westmed schedules weekly formal clinical case rounds, specialty case rounds, didactic tutorials, trial written examinations, Medical Grand Rounds and a mentor program.  Unlike other Networks, Westmed convenes monthly FRACP-style half-day trial clinical examinations, and annual subspecialty trial short-case examination sessions in cardiology, respiratory, neurology, gastroenterology and rheumatology for clinical exam candidates. The Westmed Network IT system is highly advanced and most tutorials, lectures and Medical Grand Rounds presentations are available for review on the trainee internet website.  Access to the FRACP Video-conferencing lectures is available at all hospitals.
