Program Description
New Street Adolescent Service is an early intervention program for young people who have sexually abused. It is part of an interagency child protection response in the area of child sexual abuse.
New Street Adolescent Service aims to assist the young person to address their past abusive behaviours, the harm these behaviours have caused and to develop safe, respectful and responsible ways of behaving.
New Street Adolescent Service does not provide a residential service for young people, but does work with residential service providers.
Participants in the program need to be able to attend appointments in North Parramatta.
Program Principles
- Safety and protection of children and young people is paramount.
- Intervention in child sexual abuse requires an interagency response.
- Sexual abuse is behaviour of choice and is harmful.
- All young people have the capacity to develop healthy and respectful ways of being and not continue sexually abusive behaviour.
- New Street Adolescent Service is committed to not labelling young people as “offenders” and aims to promote the development of positive identities.
- Young people who have sexually abused are responsible for:
- Their sexually abusive behaviours.
- Their setting up of sexual abuse.
- The impact and effects for the child they abused and his/her family.
- Parents/Carers are responsible for:
- Providing resources both physical and emotional which are essential to the young persons development.
- Ensuring safety e.g. appropriate supervision and limits.
- Providing adult guidance, advice and support.
- New Street is responsible for:
- Assessing individual needs for each young person and family.
- Recognising young peoples positive qualities.
- Ensuring accountability for services provided.
- The developmental needs and abilities of young people are considered in the provision of all services.
- Counselling is not an alternative to criminal justice or other socially sanctioned responses.
- There must be a clear commitment to confidentiality being limited.
Services Provided For:
Young people between the ages of 10 and 17 years who sexually abuse. Priority is given to those aged between 10 and 14 years.
The program is also for parents, caregivers and other family members. Parent/caregiver participation is essential in the support of responsible and appropriate behaviours and life styles for the young people.

- Individual counselling.
- Counselling and support for family and caregivers.
- Group work.
- Consultation with agencies.
- Community education.
