Program structure:

The program has two components:

PART A the first six months educational and guided clinical practice will be conducted within the Sydney West Area Mental Health Services. The comprehensive clinical experience together with the supervision component will provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and competency to deliver skilled and innovative mental health nursing services, in line with the National and State Mental Health Plans.

PART B upon successful completion of Part A, participants will be eligible to enrol in 2 subjects (HECS attracting) in the 1 st year of the Master of Nursing (Mental Health) Course at the University of Western Sydney (Parramatta) whilst continuing to undertake further comprehensive clinical experience with clinical supervision. On completion, participants may exit with a Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Mental Health) or continue in the Master of Nursing (Mental Health).

The program is divided into 2 separate Modules.

MODULE 1 is divided into 8 educational units and a clinical component, which introduces the individual within their own environment and reflects the inter-relationships, intra-relationships and nurse / patient relationship, within the individual’s cultural, spiritual and environmental background.

MODULE 2 consists of 8 educational units making links between major mental illnesses and behaviours identified in Module 1. This module will guide the participants towards integration of newly gained information to professional clinical practice, leading to the ability to anticipate individual needs and goals and prioritise nursing care accordingly.

Participants will receive theory and practice guidance on rehabilitation programme, counselling and group therapy and are afforded the opportunity to be reviewed by their peers whilst presenting therapies related to mental health nursing.

CLINICAL COMPONENT

The comprehensive clinical experience together with the supervision component will provide the participants with the necessary knowledge and competency to deliver skilled and innovative mental health nursing services, in line with best practice in Mental Health Service delivery.
