Sydney West Area Mental Health Service is a comprehensive mental health service, serving the Auburn, Baulkham Hills, Blacktown, Holroyd and Parramatta local government areas. Inpatient beds are operated to provide a full range of general and tertiary referral mental health services as well as community mental health services. Inpatient services are located within Blacktown, Cumberland, Nepean and Westmead Hospitals and include acute, intensive care, rehabilitation and forensic psychiatry, as well as specialist services for child, adolescent and aged care populations and a range of specialist day programmes.
Nursing Services:
The Service employs registered and enrolled nurses on a full time, part time and casual basis and has developed a policy of negotiating flexible working hours and conditions for its staff. All services within the Area Mental Health Service are accredited with the Australian Council for Healthcare Services.
The goals of the Nursing Division of the Service are as follows:
- To provide an optimum level of holistic comprehensive and individualised nursing care.
- Commitment to the pursuit of excellence by maintaining a Nursing Quality Improvement Programme.
- To maintain a culture which encourages professional development.

The Service is situated close to the central districts of Parramatta, Blacktown and Penrith which provide extensive shopping, leisure and sporting venues. An active social club and staff support system is available within the Service.
Nursing Highlights:
- A Nursing Education Unit within the Service conducts introductory programmes in mental health nursing for registered and enrolled nurses.
- The registered nurse programme articulates with Post Graduate Mental Health Nursing Courses at University of Western Sydney - Nepean.
- The enrolled nurse programme is conducted in affiliation with the University of Technology, Sydney.
- The staff of the Education Centre also coordinate a wide range of continuing education programmes for the staff of the Service.
- Educational programmes are supported by an onsite library which houses extensive holdings on psychiatry and mental health nursing.
- Nurses at the Service are also able to access medical libraries at Westmead Hospital and other hospitals within the Area Health Service.
- The N.S.W. Institute of Psychiatry is located on the Cumberland campus and conducts multi-disciplinary mental health courses for staff.
Transport and Parking:
- All Units are located in modern buildings with convenient public transport available in the Westmead, Kingswood and Blacktown business districts, being located close to train and bus transport and adjacent major western suburbs main roads.
