Respiratory Function Laboratory
The
Respiratory Function Laboratory at Westmead Hospital provides an extensive
range of tests to assess and manage patients with cardio-pulmonary disease.
The laboratory holds full accreditation from the Thoracic Society of Australia
and New Zealand as a Category 4 Respiratory Function Service and has an
international reputation for its quality assurance and teaching programs.
The scientific director of the laboratory is Mr Stephen
West.
Tests
The Respiratory Function Laboratory routinely provides the following tests:
- spirometry (expiratory and inspiratory) using the flow-volume format
- diffusing capacity (DLCO)
- lung volumes (TLC, FRC, RV) using whole body plethysmography or nitrogen washout
- airway provocation using methacholine, hyperventilation, hypertonic saline or exercise
- skin prick testing with aero-allergens
- nasal resistance using posterior rhinomanometry
- arterial blood gases breathing air; supplementary and 100% oxygen
- maximum respiratory pressures
- airway resistance
- cardiopulmonary exercise
- simulated altitude

Reports
In normal circumstances an interpreted report is mailed to the referring physician within 5 working days. However, if requested, patients can also be given an interim report at the conclusion of testing.
Charges
Most Medicare registered patients are bulk-billed and do not incurr any out-of-pocket expenses.Overseas visitors are required to pay a fee per service.
Bookings
Patients attending the laboratory require a referral from a medical practitioner. All medical practitioners may refer patients. A standard referral form is available and recommended as it details required clinical information, patient preparations and directions to the laboratory. Referring physicians please inform patients regarding withholding medications prior to testing. The referral form is available for down-loading, Bookings are arranged by telephoning the receptionist (9845 6044). Depending on the tests requested the waiting period is usually between 2-14 days.
Interpreters
If required, trained interpreters are available to assist patients during testing. Interpreters are free of cost and can be arranged by our receptionist when booking appointments.
