Education
The Trauma Service at Westmead Hospital has a responsibility to ensure that Trauma education is available to all staff caring for the Trauma patient. This is delivered to the urban centers in the form of weekly education sessions at Blacktown Hospital, ongoing in-services by the Area Trauma Coordinator to the Emergency Departments at Auburn, Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals and delivery of the video taped weekly education sessions from Westmead Hospital to Auburn, Blacktown and Mt Druitt. A 6-day Introduction to Trauma Nursing Program is run yearly at Westmead Hospital and is available to all nursing staff in SWAHS. There is also an obligation for education in the rural sectors and this is coordinated through the Institute of Trauma and Injury Management (ITIM) with running of one day Rural Trauma Education Seminars. Early Management of Severe Trauma ( EMST) courses are run 3 times a year at Westmead Hospital and nurses from the urban hospitals are invited to attend as observers in these courses.
With the amalgamation of Western Sydney Area Health Service and Wentworth Area Health Service, education will be provided to all hospitals in this Area Health Service.
