Sydney West Area Health Service (SWAHS) serves a population of 729,942 as well as tertiary care for the entire western region with a population of 1.7 million people. Westmead Hospital is the Level 1 Trauma Centre in SWAHS and is a tertiary care facility providing all clinical specialties to care for the seriously injured trauma patient and is responsible for the support and co-ordination of the care and transfer of patients from their urban and regional hospitals within the area. Urban and regional hospitals within SWAHS are responsible for the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of the severely injured patients prior to transfer to the Major Trauma Centre for definitive care. The hospitals within SWAHS include Auburn, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Cumberland, Hawkesbury, Lithgow, Lottie Stewart, Mt Druitt, Nepean, Portland, St Josephs, Springwood and Westmead.

In 2004, Westmead Hospital admitted 2,200 trauma patients with 294 of them being major traumas (ISS > 15)

Auburn , Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals admitted 1400 trauma patients and transferred 481 patients 55 of them having an ISS > 15.
