Westmead Cancer Centre:
Brachytherapy Suite
Construction work on Westmead Hospital's new brachytherapy unit has been completed and the unit is currently being commissioned. First patients are expected in 2007.
The unit will be part of the new Westmead Cancer Care Centre, located on level one of the hospital.
Brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy in which radioactive material sealed in needles, wires, catheters or pellets (called 'seeds') is placed directly into or near a tumour.
It allows more radiation to be given safely resulting in a much shorter and more convenient course of treatment.
Brachytherapy can also be given in conjunction with external radiation treatments.
It is particularly useful in treating cancers such as prostate cancer.
The new unit includes a procedure/operating room, treatment room and support facilities.
