C5a Clinical Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit refurbishment

The upgrade of Westmead Hospital's Clinical Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Ward has been completed.

The ward, known as C5a, cares for a range of patients with blood disorders including cancer patients undergoing bone marrow transplants and patients with blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma.

The refurbishment includes more comfortable, private patient rooms and a more welcoming layout. The new patient bedrooms include en-suites and the latest infection control equipment and procedures.

The redevelopment of C5a includes:

  • 21 single rooms with en-suites
  • two two-bed rooms with separate shower and toilet - these rooms will be used for patients with non-malignant haematology conditions such as sickle cell anaemia and haemophilia
  • two negative-pressure rooms for patients with respiratory infections; designed to reduce infection risk to other patients
  • 10 positive-pressure rooms for patients who are severely immuno-compromised, to protect them from infection.

The new unit has improved infection control with restricted access, air locks, facilities for handwashing and 'gowning and gloving' procedures.

The project is part of the WIN Program redvelopment of cancer services at Westmead Hospital.

An official opening is expected to take place in late 2006/early 2007.
