About Women's Health & Newborn Care
Women's Health and Newborn Care provides:
- maternity care before, during and after childbirth
- care for high-risk pregnancies
- care for newborns and neonates
- treatment of some gynaecological disorders
- infertility services
- some children's services and other services.
Services are provided primarily for residents in the Western Sydney Health area, but some high level services are also provided for women and babies from other areas of Sydney and rural NSW.
As part of WIN Stage One, Western Sydney Health will develop a new facility for women's health and newborn care that will include:
- an in-patient unit for pre-natal and post-natal patients
- ambulatory (same day and outpatient) services for pre- and post-natal patients
- a birthing unit
- ultrasound services
- neonatology including a special care nursery and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
- inpatient and outpatient services for gynaecology and gynaecology oncology (cancer) patients
- a privately operated fertility centre.
The new centre
At main entry level, level 2, Women's Health Clinics:
- New reception, waiting area and clinics for outpatient (ambulatory) services
- Maternity outpatient services specimen collection (blood/urine) including clinics, education and blood collection
- Fertility services including treatment, laboratory services, consultation, counselling and examination rooms
- Storage and office areas
- Created in existing space (formerly administrative area)
- Will include some refurbishment of the main entrance
- New Westmead Fertility Centre under construction.
At level 3, Birth Unit & Centre for Newborn Care:
- Reception and waiting rooms
- 13 birthing rooms, each with bathroom or en-suite
- 19-cot Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- 20-cot Special Care Nursery (12 cots) and Gumnut Nursery (8 cots)
- Parent lounge and two parent bedrooms with en-suites
- Direct connection to operating suites on this level in the adjacent block
- Courtyard areas
- Staff, storage, office and education areas
- Created in existing space (formerly administrative area).
At level 4, Women's Health Ward & Maternity Ward:
- New level built over the existing roof
- 41-bed post-natal unit with 23 single bed rooms and 9 two-bed rooms each with en-suite
- 15-bed pre-natal (ante-natal) unit with 9 single bed rooms and three 2-bed rooms, all with en-suites, for patients who need hospital care prior to giving birth
- 15-bed unit for gynaecology patients (including patients with gynaecological cancer) with nine single rooms and three two-bed rooms, all with en-suites
- Storage, office, education and interview rooms, plus a bereavement room.
At level 5:
- New medical helipad for on a new level 5 linked to Emergency Department below (and all adjoining levels) via new dedicated internal lift.
Project timetable:
