WIN Program
Environment
Westmead Hospital’s WIN Program and the WIN Partner (Thiess) are working closely to ensure a “safety first” approach to environmental issues on site.
The WIN Program’s strict environmental plan includes procedures for monitoring air quality and managing asbestos on site, as well as encouraging recycling of building materials and reducing water use.
Water use
The Westmead Hospital construction site has an exemption from Sydney Water to allow contractors to hose down the building site, and some construction vehicles.
Hosing is essential to keep the dust levels to a minimum and to help maintain good air quality for site workers, hospital staff, visitors and patients.
A truck washing bay inside the site is also an essential part of construction operations. Truck washing keeps the amount of dirt carried onto nearby roads to a minimum. Water in the truck washing bay is collected and re-used to wet down the excavation site.
Asbestos management
More than 20 high-tech asbestos monitors on and around the construction site are checked daily and all results are independently tested by an accredited off-site laboratory. To date, all readings have been well under the recommended guidelines.
Air quality
Air monitoring for dust particles is also a regular part of environmental management. Air monitors are situated on the construction site, in plant rooms and on the wards, and they are also checked daily.
